Know where your operations meet biodiversity.

Screen company locations against biodiversity-sensitive areas to identify potential exposure and prioritize further assessment.

What it is for

Turning biodiversity data into a practical screening tool

Companies can operate across tens, hundreds, or even thousands of locations. Understanding whether these operations are located in or near biodiversity-sensitive areas can be difficult, especially when company location data and biodiversity datasets exist separately.

At the same time, companies, investors, and financial institutions are increasingly expected to understand and report how business activities interact with biodiversity.

One example is the SFDR Principal Adverse Impact indicator concerning activities negatively affecting biodiversity-sensitive areas. In practice, assessing this indicator is challenging because organisations first need to understand where their operations are located in relation to sensitive natural areas.

The problem

Biodiversity information is often complex, fragmented, and difficult to connect with company-level data.

A company may know the addresses of its facilities, warehouses, factories, offices or other operational sites, but may not know whether these locations overlap with or are located close to protected or biodiversity-sensitive areas.

Manually checking hundreds of locations against multiple environmental datasets is time-consuming and difficult to scale.

Where do a company's operations potentially interact with biodiversity-sensitive areas?

What the tool does

Biomensura combines company location data with geospatial biodiversity and protected-area data. Each company location is geographically compared with relevant biodiversity-sensitive areas, providing a simple first-level assessment of whether operations may be exposed to biodiversity-related risks.

Results as simple indicators

  • Whether the company has operations in or near biodiversity-sensitive areas: yes / no
  • Number of locations potentially exposed
  • Percentage of company locations potentially exposed
  • Individual sites that may require further assessment

The purpose is to transform complex spatial datasets into information that can be understood and used in company-level sustainability analysis.

What can it be used for?

SFDR and PAI screening

Support initial analysis related to the SFDR biodiversity PAI indicator by identifying company operations that may be located in or near biodiversity-sensitive areas.

Corporate biodiversity assessment

Give companies an overview of where their own facilities and operations may interact with sensitive natural areas.

Investment analysis

Help asset managers and financial institutions identify portfolio companies that may require more detailed biodiversity due diligence.

Supply chain and supplier screening

Screen company or supplier locations to identify potentially biodiversity-sensitive operations across a wider value chain.

Sustainability reporting and due diligence

Provide a structured starting point for biodiversity-related reporting, risk assessment, and internal sustainability processes.

How an assessment runs

01

Enter a company

Type the group name and, optionally, its home country.

02

Automatic assessment

The service researches the group's sites, locates them and screens them against the protected-area network — no manual data entry.

03

Read the map

Flagged sites first, boundaries drawn, exposure share calculated.

04

Get your attributes

Download your site attributes in CSV or over the API.

Data sources

  • Natura 2000 network — European Environment Agency protected-site boundaries across the 27 EU member states.
  • Google Maps Places — site locations, addresses and coordinates for the company's physical footprint.
  • Research model — identifies which head offices, plants and R&D centres the group actually operates before anything is looked up.

Coverage note: sites outside the EU are located and mapped, but marked as outside the Natura 2000 dataset's coverage.
